BASILE DOLBEJEFF

I don't know if you remember Dolbejeff, Jack. Everybody pronounced his name "Double-jeff" and nobody knew his first name. Ron probably remembers him very well. Davey Silk was the only guy that Dolbejeff allowed to call him "Basile." Silk probably removed a thorn from his paw at some point, who knows? Anyway, he was the Croc Platoon Sgt when I arrived in Jun68. Tough SOB, they said that when the NVA penetrated the perimeter in Tet 68, Dolbejeff went up the water tower with a .45 to "remove" one that was up there sniping at the camp.

Anyway, Davey Silk talks about sitting in the barber shop, listening to a gunship trying to take off to the west, in other words uphill, and right over the road. He said it bounced by the door of the barber shop, then there was a gawdawful crash just outside. He ran out and the ship, Dolbejeff's, was on fire in the perimeter wire. They got everybody, all shook up, out of the ship, which continued to burn and cook off ammo.

Somebody said after a while, "Where's Dolbejeff?"

At which point Davey looked back towards the hooches and saw ol' Basile coming with dark look on his face and a .38 in his hand. He had regained his senses and had gone back to get another weapon, he was gonna kill the A/C for wrecking his helicopter. "I tole that stupid SOB not to try it, he wuz gonna wreck my effing ship... well, he's never gonna wreck another one..."

Davey, the only one who could have done it, got him calmed down and the others "disappeared" the A/C; far as I know Dolbejeff never did kill him.
