As beautiful as the country was I remember the monsoon season as the time that bothered me. We would get a weather hold for one or two hours. It would clear enough for us to take off only to get up to Dak To and find it socked in. Then we would flying until we found a hole to drop through so we could land.

I pulled many R.O.N.s during that time. The good thing was no guard duty. Remember those sleeping bags we had? I think they came with that mildew smell. I remember once being up at Dak Pek. We had shut down for some reason and while we were there the fog moved in and you could not see anything. We waited the longest time before it cleared. That was one place I would never want to spend the night at.

Remember the rubber plantation south of Dragon Mountain? It had that giant house that looked like something out of "Gone With the Wind" The trees were in long rows like corn. If I can remember I think it belonged to Goodyear but don't quote me on that.

The biggest change was between the coast and the An Khe Pass. The entire area was flat as flat could be with the rice patties cut into perfect squares. Than you cross the first set of hills and you start the mountains and the jungle.

Its to bad we didn't have video cameras back then. That would be a great show on my big screen TV. Of course you had to be there.
