I was in Nha Trang for a few days when I was first coming in country. When I got there I was told how secure it was and how there hadn't been any mortar or rocket attacks in so many months (insert long period of time here). I felt reassured.

That night I hear this booming. I was staying in some temporary barracks used by the guys in transit. All of a sudden the door flies open and this SP4 tells me to lie on the floor and get under the matress. I ask him why? He says, " So you don't get blown up by the mortars, SIR!" I guess Nha Trang wasn't that secure.

That was my first mortar attack, but not my last.
