**They sure were good at the awards & decorations game, tho**

During my tour, our Awards & Decorations Officer was Lt Steve Masak, aka Gator 22; and he was always working the AO. I know personally he submitted numerous awards petitions that were down-graded or rejected because there was "no independent verification by ground commanders". Mostly this meant officers above the rank of captain. They simply were not around to actually see what went on, "up close and personal" as they say nowadays. I know that the 4th Inf Div guys we trooped around never got the full measure of official appreciation they had earned, and deserved. Yet I know of one Purple Heart awarded to a REMF who cut himself on some concertina wire while running for safety during a rocket attack at Holloway; and another guy who got an Air Medal --- for going out one day a month to get enough flight time to continue receiving flight pay: he was a supply officer in real life, and was totally useless in the air, particularly in the AO.

The real soldiers know who they are, and can take comfort in knowing that WE also know who they are. And where and when they came of age.

Because we were there with them.

And that is the greatest source of pride I have of my year in the Republic of Stinking Viet Nam.

And that's why I had to be a slick driver. No offense to you Killer Crocs, I love you guys, each and every one: but I just had to be down in the thick of things with the grunts; trying to make a difference where they lived.
