Re: The Infamous Water Tower....

Hi Ron

The night the claymores blew, I'll never forget it. Here's what happened. Pemberton, Brubaker and I were in the foxhole on the left side of bunker 6. We had been shooting quite a lot, and receiving a few rounds in return, several of which zinged off of the cement dome on the bunker.

The CO called cease fire after one of the many continuous mad minutes that night, and it got real quiet. After about minute or two a guy named Ira "Kid" Kelley, who was in the little sandbagged shack on top of bunker 6, starts blazing away with a 60. I stood on my little tippy toes and tried to see what the hell he was shooting at thinking maybe I could join in. The tracers kept getting closer and closer to the ground out in front of the bunker. To make a long story short, the next thing I saw was white flash as he hit one of the claymores. My helmet damn near flew off of my head, and of course due to the fact that the claymores were linked together with det cord, the whole line blew at once.

When they went off, Mike Iwakiri (Sp.??) got a piece of gravel stuck in his nose and a
an automatic Purple heart.

And that ain't no bull shit.
