March 4 1969

The third time proofed to be the charm as ships from the 119th AHC were finally able to start getting troops from B/3/8 and Recon/3/8 into map location YA 828899. This was the base of the northern ridgeline of what would be LZ Brace. The two previous atempts were met with heavy automatic weapons fire. Artillery and air strikes had finally softened the enemy defenses.

They mission was to re-enforce A/3/8 which had encountered heavy resistance the day before. They had many casualties and were low on everything. D/3/8 was moving toward the beleagued company from the southwest. They had encountered enemy resistance near Hill 947. Because of the action to the north and southwest of A/3/8 they were able to escape their small perimeter and evade the NVA.

Once troops were on the ground a Tactical Emergency was called to extract A/3/8. Ships from the assault group were joined by other ships from Camp Holloway to accomplish this mission. The company had been lead to a wide spot in a creek by a LOH from the 4th Avn. This was northwest of their contact. Hovering one ship at a time into the extraction point the soldiers were pulled into the ships. The helicopter were unable to land because of the terrain so the crewmembers hung outside the ships to pull the soldier into the ships. Because of the area and the chance that the NVA would attack at any minute the normal five to six passenger load was ignored. As many as possible were loaded. One ship reported have 13 on board as it hovered out. The wounded were rushed to LZ Mary Lou and the remainer were taken to LZ Pause.

On March 2 1969, A/3/8 had started their mission from LZ Mary with 105 personal. Between their first contact on Mar. 3rd and their extraction on Mar.4th they would have 32 killed and 52 wounded. Four of these men would later die from their wounds. The three missing would be found alive over the next several days. They had walked into what is believed a Battalion size basecamp of the 66th NVA Reg. The battle for LZ Brace would continue for 4 more days.
