The worst duty I thought was being flare ship. You would about twenty-five of those giant flares loaded in the ship and just the thought of one of those things going off inside the ship scared me to death. Talk about crash and burn. I do remember actually dropping them once. Hook the D-ring to the landyard and then pick this fifty pound cylinder up and throw it out the door. It's the middle of the night and cold as hell and some nit-wit wants us to open the doors and throw this thing out because they thought they saw something. Having flare duty was like 100% alerts. We never got hit on 100% alerts and us flying dumb-dumb circles over Holloway at night was a waste of time. Give me a hot LZ anytime.Rather be shot at then bored silly.
