Yeah, I remember that one. I don't remember exactly where, but it was somewhere up around Dak Seang I think. Anyway, some of the first flight guys were doing CA's with the 47th ARVN Regt and they began, innocently enough, with an artillery prep of the LZ. Then arty stopped, and the guys started lugging ARVNs into the LZ. After a couple of lifts in, they started shooting again.

The A/C was one of the 6 guys I went to flight school with, and all ended up in the 119th. Wes Peyton, a long tall slender Kansan, was the Co. IP after Ron Mittendorf left in the early summer of '70. Anyway, they're on short final when they get tapped by a 105 round and do a somersault, scattering ARVN's all over the place. The remarkable thing is not only did nobody get killed, nobody even got seriously hurt.

I'm reading in the Unit History, and see they gave Wes the VN Cross of Gallantry. I didn't know that. Nice of them, but I'm sure he would have preferred not to get shot down by "our own guys".
