Bob, when I was in Huey transition, my IP was a Tet vet who told me repeatedly to listen to my crew and do what they told me. When I got in-country and was on my first CA, I was flying with WO1 "Lurch" Morrison. On about the third lift, he gave me the a/c and asked if I knew what to do; and I said "Not really." He told me to listen to my crew, and do what they told me.
After that, it was easy.
