Re: Old Timer
In Response To: Old Timer ()

This is the message I got from Clinton, I hope Wacko is proud of himself. I don't know what it is about going into Pleiku and having some fun after
some of the combat assaults that we did. And sure I had some drinks. But I
maintained my aircraft and I manned my machine gun with the rest of them.
That doesn't make me a loser. I was young and stupid at that time. On the
night we got mortared on Feb 7, 1965 me and some other guys got back to the
compound from downtown a couple of hours before the attack began. We were
just lucky the VC in the area didn't bother us because they wanted to
maintain the element of surprise. One of the guards on the perimeter got his
throat slashed because he fell asleep that night. Now that guy was a loser.
I went on to serve two more tours in Nam in 1968 and 1972. My second tour in
Chu Lai I wised up and did not drink anything but beer and we had no chance
to go down town and see some girls. But we had parts runs where we went to
Saigon and had fun. I ended up on my last tour flying helicopters for the
60th Aslt Helicopter Company in Ninh Hou just up the road from Nha Trang. I
served 26 years in the Army retiring in 1986 as a CW3. The guys that were on
hard drugs in Nam who couldn't face reality. Those guys were the losers. I
did my job as a professional soldier. And I have no regrets about anything I
did over there. I didn't realize that some guys who were in Nam had such a
bad attitude. I'm sorry I signed that dammed guest book.

A professional soldier.
