Ron, You never leave anyone behind unless it is not your decision. You did the right thing. In my case we were still 30' from the make shift log pad and I could not tell how much rotor clearance we had with the trees. It got worse when a grunt on the ground decided to light a flair for us. The reflection off of the mist made visibility impossible. My pilot was lucky to be able to hover straight up with out hitting any thing. Once we got to the top of the trees he nosed the ship over to get lift, he got vertigo instesd. To this day I am not sure what kept us from a direct impact with the ground at the bottom of the mountain. That had a lot to do with our not making a second attempt at the hover hole as well as being low on fule.

We all relive many days in Nam and I relive that one but I am OK with it.

PS: The pilot was one of best in the 119th at the time. I would fly anywhere and do any thing with him.
