Re: One Pilot's Perspective
In Response To: Re: One Pilot's Perspective ()

Yeah, I can dig it. The "spin" I described would put the aircraft where the folks on the left would only see the spinning ground exploding up at them; while those on the right side would only see sky and clouds, spinning. The guys on the left side might get nauseous, while those on the right would just pop their ears. We could do it flat, or we could do it nose-down; nose-down was harder to recover at the bottom because of the very high sink rate, and there not being any lift on account of the rotor disk not being level on roll-out. G-forces on the pull-up would be vicious. And the whole thing only lasted a couple of seconds: you could drop 2500 feet in less than 5 seconds, say 1-1/2 to 2 turns. You could pass through the zap zone in 1 turn, say 2-3 seconds. So the spin never lasted long enough to really "get" to anyone. Except maybe non-fliers! :) Heheheheh

As I reflect on the true "Corbin", I think keeping everyone feeling like they are still on board might be easier in a nose-down, body-level, corkscrew spin; but either way, it's the sense of falling that is the same. As long as a pilot does not push hard pedal opposite the turn, the aircraft will stay "balanced" and everyone will stay solidly planted aboard. But it sure is a kick in the ass!

In our modified "High Overhead Approach", pulling the cyclic back pulls the nose around faster, and puts the pilots in greater positive g-force plants into their seats. The tail gets pushed around faster, and gets g-force unloaded. But there isn't anybody back there to worry about, usually. At the axis of the rotation, at the well, the g-force loading will ease off substantially; which can be unnerving. But you are still solidly in the aircraft. At least, I don't remember anyone ever falling out. (Of course, with ARVNs, did anyone keep count? Seemed like they were always packed in like sardines. And didn't smell as good.)

I will be busy and away all weekend; I hope everyone has a good one.
