I don't if this is the same person but there was a LRRP by the name of McCoy,not sure if that was his real name,that would carry out one man missions. Mainly because no one else would go with him. He was like a training NCO who would take the newbees out for the first time and show them the ropes.

He would live off the land and only call for help when he had gotten into so much trouble he could no longer out run it. I remember the other LRRPs talking about him as some type of ghost. Don't know what was bull-shit or the truth. I did have the pleasure of pulling him out in Laos after he had throw a grenade at a tank along the border.

After the 4th pulled back from Dak To at the end of 1968 and we worked less and less with the LRRPs I lost track of him. I had heard that he died from the stuff he ate while on patrol but then again I don't know for sure. I do remember that he was from Hawaii but was lite skinned and slightly taller then me. Maybe 5'8" or so. He had jet black hair but never smiled or like you said say anything. Anybody who worked that area would remember him if not by name by deeds.
