** What do you mean by your six? **

Good question, Mary Beth, and Carl has our eternal gratitude for holding his answer in check.

Crews communicated (then, and I think still do) by reference to a clock face, looking from above the aircraft. (Not just us, it goes back to the beginning of aviation.) For internal communication, straight in front of the aircraft is "12 o'clock", no matter what course the aircraft is flying.

90 degrees out to the right side is 3 o'clock, straight out the opposite (left) side is 9 o'clock, etc. Out the rear-view mirror (kidding, we didn't have 'em) was 6 o'clock. Ahh. Yer "six."

Aviator or aircrew jargon, very easily applied to the tail-end of anything... or "anyone." As in, "Hey Joey, check the six on that one, huh huh huh." Or, "Hey Joey, check yer six. How'd your wife find out where we wuz goin', huh?"

Give us, err, I mean give Carl & Tom, a few more months, they'll have you talking a whole new language.
