Re: Perimeter Fire
In Response To: Perimeter Fire ()

The only time I remember having a fire to clear the grass out of the wire was in late Oct. or early November of 68. It was about the time Dana and a few others first got to the platoon. It was also the last time because we destroyed most of the wire and posts that supported it. I don't recall anybody getting burned except for the enginneers that had to rebuild it after we got done with it.

That was another reason I always tried to fly during the day. Them and those stupid details that they would put us on. Replacing the sandbags around the hootches because the old ones had worn out. How does a sandbag get worn out? All it did was sit there. When we moved to the new area that's all they did was find dumb shit to do. Remembering building the sidewalks out of pallets and then in the rainy season the damn things sinking out of sight. It wasn't bad enough that we pulled guard duty every third or fourth day and the flare stand-by duty and the the fire-fly missions plus be with the ship for ten to fourteen hours a day. If you did happen to get some time off you had to hide from the lifers so you didn't have to gather stones and rocks to decorate the area outside the Orderly Room.

I remember right after Sam Stella's ship had crashed at that firebase and he was trapped in the gun well for over an hour they finally got him out. His foot and leg was all banged up and he was unable to wear his boots and they tried to have him pull tower guard because they couldn't find anybody else. He had a hard time even standing let alone pull eight hours of guard in that damn tower.

Sorry to go off like that but the flying never bothered me. It was the stupid shit that we sometimes had to put up with that made me mad. War maybe hell but the duty at base camp was bullshit!
