Mark,

We had two "Friendly Fire" incidents during my tour. 13 May '69 my platoon was moving to set up an ambush and we came upon a clearing. 8-10 NVA were moving across the clearing. We should of taken them with small arms but 81mm mortars were called in. They dropped the mortars right on top of us wounding nine men.

21 June '69 we lost our platoon sergeant, he was calling in artillery to prep an area prior to searching it. One of the artillery rounds hit the top of the canopy and the shrapnel struck him and killed him immediately. Just a few days earlier I had been awarded a 3-day in-country R&R and I was not with the platoon that day. I can't be 100% sure but the sergeant probably was responsible for selecting me for the R&R. I have spoken with the brother and son of the platoon sergeant and they still grieve to this day over the loss.

Friendly fire incidents were all too common. There was another incident 15 Sept.'68 that Buzzy can describe for you.
