In 1798, the Marine Corps was formally re-established by a congressional act that also created the Marine Band.

In 1804, Vice President Aaron Burr mortally wounded former Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton in a pistol duel near Weehawken, N.J.

In 1864, Confederate forces led by Gen. Jubal Early began an abortive invasion of Washington, D.C., turning back the next day.

In 1934, President Roosevelt became the first chief executive to travel through the Panama Canal.

In 1955, the U.S. Air Force Academy was dedicated at Lowry Air Base in Colorado.

In 1966, PFC Robert Bernard Mann, CE, 119 AHC, and in 1970, SP4 Warren Lively II, G, 119 AHC, UH-1H, t/n 66-16317, were Killed In Action in the Republic of Viet Nam. I think of Warren nearly every day; more especially on this day.
