Just to insert a note, Lumpy; in early 1969, 4th Division HQ prohibited their Medevac ships from entering "hot" LZs. Q> What was a hot LZ? A> A hot LZ is any LZ with wounded in it, because if there are wounded the LZ must be considered hot.

I'm not saying the 4th Div crews agreed with that; I don't think they did, and I've always thought that given the choice they'd have gone in.

But the fact is they did not have a choice, and we did most of the dustoff work in the Plei Trap, no matter what kind of shape the poor shot-up grunts were in. The only medical training we ever had was the day on "sucking chest wounds" and "stop the bleeding" that everybody got. And I, for some reason, seemed to always get the bloody end on my side of the ship, whether I was flying CE or Gunner. Hence, "Doc."

We really did everything we could to keep those poor bastards alive to Kontum. Sometimes we did, and other times we couldn't.

We'd be out at dawn, finally get back to the hooches after dark, all bloody and dirty and covered with snot and bile and gore, and the mess hall would be closed and every damned drop of water used up. That happened one time too often, some of the pilots actually hijacked the officers' showers up above and held them open for us. A few basecamp RLOs made the mistake of questioning who was in their showers and wished they had not...
