Re: for Bob Taylor-
In Response To: for Bob Taylor- ()

According to Joe Galloway, there were only 2 aircraft that flew into LZ X-Ray after it was closed due to hostile fire. This was to deliver water and ammo and to evacuate the wounded. According to him, both aircraft were from the 229th. One was flown by MOH winnner Edd Freeman the other By Maj. Bruce Crandall.I saw Army news clips of choppers delivering ammo and taking out wounded supposedly from LZ X Ray and they had a nine visible on the door. It may have been 229 Not sure. The pictures Joe took of the 229th at LZ Xray had NO numbers on the door.(this may be seen at Joe's site) The history of the 119th shows it operating in the Ia Drang at that time of the overall battle but absent during the X Ray fight. There is NO REFERENCE to LZ Xray in the history of the 119th. Ditto the 155th history that I saw. On the 155th site is a series of 6 photos taken from Stagecoach 936 taken by Warren Smith in Nov 1965 titled "1st lift into LZ Xray-1965" (See Link)
I think I may have been wrong stating the 119th was at X-ray during the 3 day fight when in fact it was in the Ia drang in the early pre-assault phase and during the extraction. I can CONFIRM only that the 229th was in the LZ during the 3 day fight AFTER the LZ was closed. Except for the eyewitness photographs and the statement of the 155th website I can find zero evidence of other than the 229th at XRAY DURING THE FIGHT. That does not surprise me. Divisions kept much better histories than independent units.
In stating that the news film in the National archives from that time may be misleading,
here is a quote from the Ia Drang site regarding film clips of the battle. Remember, Galloway had only still camera's
"In terms of the battles at Lz Xray and Albany, the film is chilling. You get to hear Walter Cronkite, Chet Huntley and see a very young Peter Jennings (this had to be one of his first days as the ABC anchor) calmly talk about "human wave attacks" and "hand to hand combat". Actual battlefield network footage was shot on the Third Day of Xray when the press showed up to reinforce poor Joe Galloway. In the high tech world we live in today, it is interesting to see what low tech graphics passed for state-of-the-art back then."

This could account for the "119th" Aircraft in the film clip that I referred to and the reference to LZ Ray. Until we can find eyewitness accounts I will concede the 119th was there during the pre-attack phase and during the relief effort. I think Joe Galloway and General Moore are the only reliable sources for activity AFTER the LZ was closed. Sorry guy's. Thanks for making me do my homework.
