Crew Positions

Earlier Dave Fogg asked about crew positions in UH-1 Helicopters.
In Nam the AC of a slick sat on the left. He had fewer instruments but better vision for steep approaches. The co-pilot sat on the right. In C- model guns these positions were reversed so the Aircraft commander could fire the rockets. I do not believe seat positions had anything to do with the fixed wing tradition of the pilot in command sitting in the left seat. They were decided on in the early days on a strictly functional basis.
Before 1973 the Crew chief sat on the left side in the left transmission well seat because the tail rotor was on the left back then and could be seen and cleared by an " Aviation Specialist" not an 'Infantry gunner'.
The Gunner occupied the right transmission well seat (in the early days most gunners were assigned from the infantry for 4 to 6 month stints.)
In 1973 the tailrotor was switched to the right side and the crew chief/ gunner positions changed in most units. To this day, as far as I know, the crew chief sits where he can clear the tail rotor during tight LZ operations.
