Gail,

The Nov '65 Ia Drang Cav fights are well documented but other units were also decimated in that area. On 7/3/66 B 1/35 lost a whole platoon, they found all the dead with the bolts from their M-16's removed. They knew they were not going to make it and they didn't want the NVA to capture their weapons and be able to use them. B 1/12 on 7/12/67 had 32 KIA's, 31 WIA's and 7 men captured. On 8/2/66 C 1/5 (Cav) just over the mountain from where C 2/35 was fighting, lost another whole platoon (45 men). The NVA were chanting "1st Cav, 1st Cav"-- they thought they were fighting another unit of the Cav when they were engaging C 2/35.

Here's an email that Mark Butler sent me. Mark was with the 3/8. This incident happened near Duc Co.

David,
I have an autographed copy of The War of the Innocents. I won it at a 3/8
reunion in Las Vegas last summer. Charles Flood was there and so was
Charger. My platoon was the one that was ambushed (18 KIA, 8 WIA) and John
"TANK" Waldren unscratched. Our Medic was one or the ones captured, tied to
a tree and had gauze shoved down his throat until he suffocated. They also
cut his finger off to get his ring off. I can remember most of the KIA's
names. That day pretty much sucked! I came home on 12/13/67.
