Dennis,

The secret to eBay is to have two windows open during the final minutes of the auction. One window you can keep 'refreshing' the page (every 5 seconds or so) to watch the the bidding through the final 5 minutes. The other window you already have your bid set and ready to hit the 'place bid' button.

When the bidding gets down to about 20 seconds, you change windows to the one where you have the bid ready to go and hit the button. It will add your bid at around 10 seconds and the others won't have time to respond to it before the bidding ends.

This is really helpful when bidding on items that collectors team up on. If you are bidding on anything collectable and the other bidders are named 'vetcollectitall' and they have a rating of somewhere around 2567, it's a pretty good chance these guys are helping each other out and driving the bidding up.... Collectors don't buy on eBay, they sell there. They buy from each other privately.

Also, make sure the bid you put in and have ready is the maximum amount that you would be willing to pay for the item. The price will only increment to the next bid amount but if anyone else has put in higher bids, it will automatically rebid for you. This is important since placing your bid at 20 seconds will not leave you enough time to re-bid should someone elses bid be higher than yours.

This is a good method. I rarely loose an auction on something I want and since I bid the highest amount that I would be willing to pay for the item, it doesn't bother me to loose to a higher price.

Good luck !
