Re: Some Yellow Platoon Pilots Mar 67

Tom,
I sent an email to an address that I had for him. No response so far. Ron was my very first AC and I was his very first Peter Pilot. In Dec 66 we did a recon with a 4th ID photographer of a couple of very tough LZs along a river on the Cambodian border. We had a 2 gunship escort commanded by CW2 Jerry Nash. As I continued on a west bound course one of the gun pilots said " Wonder where those two Yahoos are going" The other replied " I don't know, but if they keep on that course they will be solo". Ron warned me that they "Have air bursting flak on that side of the river" and I made a turn toward the LZ and made damned sure I stayed on our side of the river as I descended to the level needed to by the photographer. I did not realize until much later that 2 gunship escorts were only used for single slicks on very special (read dangerous) occasions. In our innocence and inexperience, we carried it off without a hitch.
