Thanksgiving 1968

(From Joe Farmer B 1/35) We were somewhere on the border, maybe just over it, when we received our Thanksgiving dinner. There were no plates or utensils so we tore C-Ration boxes and used them for plates. We opened C-Ration cans and used them to serve the meal. Lt. Kelly told us that every soldier gets a turkey dinner on Thanksgiving, no matter where they might be (if possible).

(From Ralph Leebert B 1/35) About the Thanksgiving Dinner, yes, you are correct about having the meal brought out in 105 howitzer cannisters. In my journal I mentioned about that day when I wrote, "We reached our night location earlier than yesterday and it gave us plenty of time to cut a field of fire, put out trip flares, claymore mines, and dig our fighting positions. I am glad we had time to do all this because the terrain was terrible. Many times we were crawling on our hands and knees. I knew this was not the type of Thanksgiving Holiday one would want to participate in. In fact, I thought the turkey loaf I ate for lunch was to be my celebration of the day. However, I was surprised to get a hot meal for supper. We had a small portion of turkey, a little cranberry sauce, two olives, a few peanuts, a little dressing, and fruitcake."
