The Mermike Can

Does anybody know how these containers got their name. One of my first missions was taking these cans into Fire base 29. At first I had no idea what was in them. After a couple of days I started to know what was what but never understood where they got their name. The 1st Brigade was pretty good about getting hot chow to the guys on the firebases. If I can remember right we would make a chow run to the bases about every other day. It seems like it was always the noon meal. Maybe because we would have to pick the cans up before dark so they could be used the following day. You could always tell what was in the cans by the way they came back to the ship. If they were half full it was probablly liver or that dead carp fish they would try to give us. If the outside of the can was brown it was beef stew and if it was yellow it was chicken stew. Potatoes were easy. They were mashed, mashed or mashed. There was always a can of beets for the veg. I'll bet not one kid back in the world ever had to eat beets during the Vietnam war. They sent all of them to us.
