Actually, Tom, 834 returned to service after I left and Al Mixer's first flight with the 119th was on 834, with my old gunner Eggy.

It was eventually shot down in an LZ in Cambodia, May 70, by an ARVN 105 that hit right under the tail boom. The ARVNs awarded the AC a Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, I guess for not calling in a flight of gunships on their arty position. He was probably a little steamed also. They ended up blowing the ship up in place.

I'm actually working with our local VFW post to get a Cobra for display outside the post. (No Hueys available.) The guys at the post have a tentative tail number (66-15325), and it's an AH-1G that flew in Vietnam with B Troop, 1st Squadron, 9th Cav (1st Cav Div). Turns out one of the post members was with B/1/9 at the same time, and he's checking with pals to see if anyone has actual pictures. Weird.

Their seed money for the project came as an anonymous donation in memory of John C. Schiffhauer, 119th CE, KIA 3/1/1969 in the Plei Trap valley, which will be noted on the final display. Quite a coincidence, eh?
