I preferred someone who used alcohol over pot. I could tell when he was impaired but not the pot smoker. Later I learned to look at the blood shot eyes and then realized most had it from lack of sleep and gun powder. In over two tours I never did learn to accept the pot or dope. Maybe it was the result of not liking the state side supporters of it. I tried it once before vietnam. All it did was make my fingers stink, my eyes water and my nose run. I know some of my troops used it on the second tour and I never bothered them as long as they were straight at work,but lord help the hard core user. I would not tolerate them. I had one opium smoker who was off his post and sound asleep. I got his rifle, told the XO I was pressing charges. The man got 6 months in LBJ, was back in the unit after 30 days for "good behavior" (read " Bad Ass") and fragged my generator and wounded my Tech supply clerk. I should have shot the SOB. I would have had the old man not gotten him out of the unit quickly. I was going to take him on guard duty and give him a " Russian Article 15" and the old man "Councelled" me for falling back on my "Old Noncom Ways" but my troops knew I was right. I am still pissed at that SOB and if he's not dead he should be.
