Mark, I have several WWII friends that served in the Pacific, they smoked pot as it was grown to provide rope. This was well before the 60"s. Alcohol was the big drug for WWII. I don't know what the drug of choice was for Korea, I don't have that many friends who served there although my dad was killed there at the Chosin Reservoir in 52 or 53.
