Re: Guard Duty
In Response To: Guard Duty ()

Guard duty always came on the worst night. It was the day when we got back from a three day RON at Dak To or after flying ten or twelve hours and having a 25 hr intermediate inspection that needed to be pulled.

After I made E-5 I also had the honor of pulling Sarg of the Guard. That any came around about every forty days or so. That was another thing that sucked. Why didn't the NCO over E-5 pull S.O.G? None of the platoon Sgts or from maint. ever pulled night duty. It was always us. I always pulled the three to five thirty tour. That way I was up when the truck showed up so we could get a shower before pre-flight.

I hated hooking up the claymore mines. I don't know if I didn't trust them or the idea of being out in the wire where the dinks could see you and see where the mines were located. I was on the perimeter the night when they blew the mines during Tet. The back blast was enough to blow us right out of the trenches, I can't imagine what it must be like if you were ever in the front of those damn things.

Only thing worse then guard was 100% alerts and we would have to sleep on the perimeter. The damn bugs would eat you alive. I would pull my blanket over my head and then put my helmet on so the mosquiotes would stay away from my ears so I could sleep.

I remember one night that one of the bunkers on our side of the perimeter called for a flare. The mortar crew fired it and instead of going off in the air it impacted and exploded just outside the wire near Highway 19. All I could hear was someone from the Croc's bunker yell "Short!" I think everyone on the perimeter started laughing. The guys at the CQ were on the radio wanting to know what was happening and every time somebody would try to report we would start laughing again. I don't think it was that funny but being as tried as we normally were it was the best show in town at the time.
