Creature Comforts

The best guy I saw to care for his comfort was Jim Sempek. He would always have the things to make life a little easier. He was the one who had the hot plate and all the small pans for cooking. Two fans would be placed in just the right spots near his bunk during the dry season. He was the only one I can remember who had an air mattress, sleeping bag, poncho liner and several other little things which the army had to offer.

Jim's uniforms were all taylored and fit like a glove. He could have been on a three day RON at Dak To and then pull a night of guard during the monsoon season and he still looked better then any of us. He was a good man to have as your gunner. He also did a hell of a job behind a machine gun. He was on the ship behind us as we tried to get troops into LZ Brace during the first week we were in the Plei-Trap. The gooks were waiting for us in the LZ and one had run under my ship as we approached the zone. Jim was outside the ship blasting at the guy but because they were higher and had a bad angle he was unable to get the guy. I saw him and started to shoot at him with my .45. The guy saw me and backed up to get away and old "Eggy" was able to cut him in two with a burst from his gun. Later that day we stopped to thank the crew of Gator 390 for saving our bacon and we discovered that Jim had shot the front of the skid off trying to get the dink which was below my ship. He didn't live that down for several weeks. That night when we got in we helped maint. change the skid because there was some talk about Jim getting an article 15 because of it. Typical REMFer shit.
