George, I am about to divulge a great secret that flight crews, as part of their indoctrination, swore never to reveal to a grunt: One word. "ADF"

Every town of any size had a transmitter that's real function was navigation. But the transmitter had to transmit something... which was music. More often than not, unfortunately, it was a snappy little polka, not CCR etc.

As we moved around, we would dial in the various frequencies on the Automatic Direction Finder, then just follow the beam to wherever we were going. All the while listening to music. We boys went to war with tunes playing in the background, George.

We also used ADF to find LZs and LRRP teams; we could home in on a long count and find them if we weren't sure of their location. Only problem was you couldn't tell without additional information whether they were in front of or behind the ship. That caused big trouble sometimes.
