I just received the 1/22 radio logs for the Battle for Chu Moor Mountain, approximate grid YA 868888. The battle was probably one of the most bloodiest fought by the 1/22 during the war. It took place from the 24th of April until the 28th of April, 1968. The radio logs only covered until the 27th of April. The National Archives state that the 28th of April is not avaiable. Between the 24th and 27th of April, the 1/22 had 122 WIA and 10 KIA. We had another 10 KIA on the 28th of April, and God only knows how many more WIA.
On the 25th, Gator 524 was flying C & C for the 1/22 and took 15 hits of heavy machine fire. The ship lost hydraulics and was forced down with one crew member WIA. Immediately, another Gator ship was requested for C & C and Gator 517 responed and was on station within 20 minutes.
Just wondering if any of you guys were around during that time or knew the crew of Gator 524 or Gator 517. Pat Kelly seemed to think that most of the 119th was at FOB at the time. Most of the support came from the 57th, the Gambler Guns from the 4th AVN BN, and the Tornado's, I believe a Cav unit. Gladiator 063 was shot down on the 24th with 3 WIA, and the pilot of Cougar 14 was shot in the head on the 26th and it was forced to land on the FSB so the pilot could get dusted off. Many ships during the battle took hits, even the Cider FACS. Thanks for being there.
