Letters home Feb '69

February 4, 1969: I am at the place where I first came in country it is called Mary Lou and it is in Kontum. The reason I am here is to have my ingrown toenail operated on. The first sergeant told me to get a haircut that I didn't need. I am on profile now so they can not put me on a detail, which is good. I will be back to the company tomorrow.

We are under control of the 2nd Brigade now. This will only be temporary. We are with the 2/8 (mechanized) and I saw a few of my buddies, which came in country with me.

The helicopter that got shot down was 23 miles from Pleiku and was a Medi-vac. It was taking injured soldiers from Delta Company 1/35. They were only a short distance away from us. Seven people died in the crash. The NVA shot it down with a B-40 rocket. They had Spooky shooting and air strikes but the NVA where in caves.

We are moving a lot now.

February 7, 1969: I am back in the field now and my toe is okay. Things are busy now and we are doing another sweep. We completed our bunkers today so I am kind of tired.

February 12, 1969: We received a lot of mail today, it was back-mail because we have been humping. We are on top of a hill now and I can see the other hills that we have been set up on from here. I can see the lights of Pleiku we are about 23 miles away. Now we are waiting for the Tet. I hope we stay here for awhile.

February 13, 1969: (Letter to my brother) We are now set up on a Firebase (LZ Lillie). The enemy situation is about the same we are making more and more contact with them.

February 16, 1969: We have been out in the field. We were searching some bunkers and found a lot of souvenirs. The Company surprised a bunch of the enemy and they left in a hurry. These people are real craftsmen they make their stoves and ovens from what nature has to offer.

February 22, 1969: We are taking it easy now. I haven't been feeling well, last night and this morning and I am running a temperature.

February 26, 1969: We are cordoning and searching villages. Pleiku and Kontum have been getting hit with 122mm rockets. We found some of those and they are heavy and big. We have killed a couple of VC from the villages and also NVA we ambushed. We spotted some VC in a rice paddy but they were out of range. Cobra gunships took care of them. The Tet isn't affecting us as much as the Marines and the 25th Infantry Division.

February 26, 1969: (Letter to my brother) What we have been doing is cordoning and searching a bunch of villages. All we have found are a couple of VC, which are dead. We have been humping all day and it gets to be a drag. We are now starting to dig our November Lima (Night Laager). Tomorrow I have to go out on an LP (listening post). Tonight's dinner: Beef & Spice with Sauce (B1A Unit) with fruit apricots.

February 27, 1969: Searching another village. We have been eating C-rations for long time, we hardly get any LRRP meals any more.

February 28, 1969: Tomorrow we have to climb a hill and then set up on it for a couple days. We did not get paid today because we were out humping.

Letter undated: I took a lot of pictures of a village we had to search. The enemy had been to this village because we found blood and medicine. We also found a wounded enemy, we put him in a pancho liner and extracted him by helicopter. He was wounded in the head, arm & leg. Boy I really stink and need a bath and clean clothes, it has been quite awhile since we have had any of these. Time to put overhead cover on our bunker, Delta Company took 17 mortars last night but they all missed the perimeter.
