I am sure Bob Taylor can explain it better but as I recall helicopters are alot airboats. They ride on a cusion of air generated by the rotor blades when at a hover. As long as you have something stable under it and are not over loaded all is well. As we all know elephant grass moves and bends under the rotor wash . We never landed, Intentionally, in the grass even if you could see through it. When the grunts jumped out they wanted to land where the previous guy did to avoid the stakes but we just could not keep a hover that long. I always told the grunts after that first experience that if they did not get out quick we would be landing on top of them. That usually got their attention.
