Re: Brief History of Germany

I had orders for Rucker after Vietnam. Knew enough that I didn't want to go there. Home (North Shore of Mass) for a month, July 1969, my brother had just gotten out after two+ years at Ft Ord as AG personnel officer. He says, here's what you do: "Clean up, put on yer best duds, go to Ft Devens (45 minutes from home) and find the Post Personnel Office. Look for the NCOIC, show him your records, ask him if he's got anything for you."

I do that. MSG Rudy Polzer. He looks at the file, looks at me, points to the desk next to his and says, "Be in that chair a week from Monday." Post and 1st Army personnel requisitions clerk. 67N2F to 71H30 with the stroke of a pen. I was staffing Devens and miscellaneous installations in the northeast with everything enlisted. Issuing travel documents to places like Nairobi, double passports to guys who needed to move between Israel and Arab countries, the works. All kinds of strange stuff.

I was going coo-coo with the chicken*hit at Ft Devens by November, told Rudy I was gonna put in papers to go back to Vietnam and the 119th. He said to me, "Please don't do that, you putz. Gimme some time, I'll find you a gig in Europe." I said OK. Couple of weeks later I had orders for CENTAG. Even shipped my car, for 9 months. Absurd. But man, was it fun. Three-month drop for college, and I was outta there end of August 1970.
