Re: Info to a friend
In Response To: Info to a friend ()

I got a note back from Sam this evening in response to the one I sent him yesterday. He said it was OK to post this, so I will. Gives us a little insite into Mr. Storey who, next to Eddie Sumpter, we really don't know much about, yet.

"Mark - Thank you so much for e-mailing me. Yes, I would like all of the information you have. Having been a Marine infantry officer in that war, I understand the nature of these things, although I will be affected I know.

Robert Storey was nicknamed "bunny" in high school because he was very quick. Even though he wasn't very big, he played football at Memphis State for two years before joining the Army.

All of us that ran around together were military children of career Air Force at Blytheville AFB, Arkansas, which, at that time, was a B-52 base. His step father was an Air Force colonel. Bunny wasn't told, for some reason, that he had been adopted, and was very upset when he learned that at about 19 years old. I remember, I was with him.

We were like a lot of kids, brash and we drank beer when we could get ahold of it, went to the river, and chased skirts. He was a typical male teenager. Liked to drive fast cars, and, I assume, chose aviation because of this.

Of the five of us that ran together, three went down in the Nam, and the other two, which includes me, were shot at and hit. One was a AF F-4E pilot, Doug Martin, shot down in Cambodia and sat in the jungle for 26 years before being identified, one a Marine in the Ashau, and Bunny.

What shocked us most about Bunny was that we did not know his fate until 1985 at a high school reunion. His family had been transferred to North Dakota and they didn't notify any of us. We learned about Bunny from another chopper pilot who had come in from Missouri. As you might imagine, the reunion went bust from then on.

I might be able to get some pictures from Dick Crampton, also a chopper pilot in the Nam. He lives in this area and probably has the high school year books, which I don't.

I have seen the pictures of your brother and he looks bright and a nice person. Believe me, Bunny Storey was also a great person and a real team player. I am sure your brother and Bunny were very tight. I know the Pleiku area was rough and that damn Plei Trap Valley leading into Cambodia was nasty. They are real heroes and nobody will ever know how much.

Thanks again Mark. I look forward to your e-mail. If you want, you could post this on the site. "
