Dear Lorraine,

Hi! Honey, How are you? Things are OK here if you don’t mind rain that comes down in buckets, mud everywhere you walk, and the smell of moldy sand bags. Everything is damp, even clean cloths are damp and smell like mold. If it weren’t for a few hours of sun each day nothing would dry out.

I guess you are glad to be out of school and have some time to give your mind a rest. Sometimes I wish I had stayed in school and skipped my chance of being here. Emotionally I go up and down depending on what is going on. Like I’ve said before, some days are good, some days are bad, and then we have shity days.

I started a new mission today, before we were doing a lot of re-supply and combat assaults, now we have been assigned a C&C mission (Command & Control). We are flying for one of commanders of the 4 Infantry Division taking him to the bases in the field. The field bases are pretty small; some are artillery some are just small base camps where patrols start from. At first it seemed like it would be easy but now after a week of it we wind up flying most of the day sometimes getting back late at night if the weather holds. Then I still have the normal Post flight and repair if needed along with an early flight the next morning. The guys name is Jackson and his nickname is Stonewall like the Civil War guy. We never have any support from other aircraft on these missions and this jerk goes out looking for trouble. Sometimes we are scouting Landing Zones for CA’s and other times just looking for enemy trails or bunkers in the jungle. This idiot tries to get shot at and has succeeded several times. If can get through one more week of this we will have a new mission. I’d rather be back at Dakto at least you knew what you were in for.

In your last letter you said next semester you will be staying in a Townhouse off campus. It will good not having to put up with all the rules of Dorm life. I just wish I could be their to greet you at the end of each day. Five girls in one house has got to be wild. I’m going to close now, the Col. is one his way to the ship. More fun and games!!

Love Tom
