Re: March 1, 1969
In Response To: Re: March 1, 1969 ()

The 4th Infantry first sent teams into the valley in late 1966 early 1967 and cut the first of the firebases. Swinger, Mile High, FSB 20, FSB 27 to name a few. A few were occupied for a short while but most of the First Brigade of the 4th Infantry moved into the Dak To area. There were at least one battle fought in this area in March of 1966, 1967 and 1968. Most operations during those times were less then two weeks. We started working in there beginning in Oct 1968. LRRP and Sniffer mission became everyday routines. Then in Nov. 1968 the 2nd Brigade moved up from down south and we started moving them into areas near and around the valley. LZ Bass was established at Polei-Kleng. LZ Mile High became operational and several small patrol bases were built along rocket ridge near Rt.14 between Kontum and Dak To.

We began operations on March 1 ,1969. This was to be the last big sweep of the valley before the first Brigade moved to An Khe and we turned the area over to the ARVNs. The size of the enemy force was far greater then anyone believed. Besides the amount of man power they also had heavy artillery and had improved the roads where truck convoys were moving quite freely. Most of the units of the 4th were under strength and movement through the valley was difficult at best. B-52, air strikes, artillery and everything else we could throw at them did not deter them. We slowed then down but the ARVNs would be no match for them. Prior to Oct.1968 very few people knew of the Plei-Trap. After March of 1969 everybody to II Corp kinew where it was at.
