The anti-war movement failed in its goal to stop the war and when it did they then turned on the service men and their families. More returning flight from Nam arrived at Ft. Lewis instead of Oakland because there were less protesters and these flights seemed to arrived later in the day so soldier headed home would be at the airport in the evenings when the crowds were the smallest.

One of my father's friends whose son was killed in April of 1969 would get phone calls from people saying their were happy his son died and they were proud of the efforts of the NVA. I arrived home in the early morning hours at O Hare field in Chicago in Sept.1969. Getting from the gate to baggage I was met with lots of evil stares and a couple foul names.

In 1977 at my ten years class reunion, one of the brighter stars of my class which had a few too many brews told me that he was a member of the anti-war, anti-racism movement in college and considered anyone who fought in the war a fool. My wife made me leave before dinner because I didn't play well with others that night. I think I broke his nose. The biggest kick in the ass was when we welcomed the draft dodgers to come home. It was okay that they left and we understood how they felt. BULLSHIT!

By the time the "Wall" was dedicated and they had the parade to welcome us back it was to late. They could take their crap and stuff it. Don't make me feel good about going to war. Just allow me to put my life together and move forward. In the end vets do what we did in the war. We fight for each other and preserve the memory of the ones we left behind. A wound that heals is forgotten. A wound which leaves a scar stays to remind us of the past. Most of us have scars and I would not want to have it any other way.
