March 9, 1969

Air strikes, air strikes and more air strikes thunder through the valley. B-52 continue to pound the areas around Hill 947. Task Force Swift has conducted some short range patrols to prepare for their move into that area. Elements of the 1/35th continue to recon the area around LZ Mary. They have discovered roads, bridges and several stores of enemy equipment.

The fighting around Hill 994 has increased. The bunker complex which was discovered is much larger then first thought. Heavy fighting continues for the second day as artillery and air support continue in that A/O.

The Plei-Trap road continues to be the scene of several fire fights as units from the 1/8th work this area. Several truck convoys have been seen and artillery called in.

The resupply of most of the firebases is hampered by enemy small arms fire and the continued enemy mortar attacks towards the bases. Each day one or two of our aircrafts are damaged. Today Croc 188 will take several rounds as they supported A/1/8 along the Plei-Trap road. The scout teams of Troop A 7/17th are the ones taking the worst beating. Hovering above the trees to help us locate units on the ground in need of resupply, the LOHs are easy targets for enemy gunners.

The long day ends and the flight crews return to Holloway safe and sound. On this second Sunday of the month the ground forces aren't as lucky. Fifteen young Americans would die today. Many of them at a place called Hill 994.
