March 29,1969

Our 0600hrs pre-flight is pushed up by two hours this morning. We have been pulled from our bunks and told to get to the flight line ASAP! Most of us are still half asleep as we head for Polei-Kleng.

At Polei-Kleng we are told to shut down and wait for orders. Soldiers from the 2/8th line the runway to be used as reinforcements. Task Force Alpha has been probed all night. Artillery from Swinger, FSB 20 and Ben Het have been supportting them . In the south LZ D-Handle has repelled two ground attacks and have received mortar fire most of the night. The brass feels the enemy is massing for an all out attack.

Two ships are sent to TF Alpha's location. They need ammo and there are wounded that need to be evacuated. Gators 409 and 270 are sent along with a set of Croc gun ships. The rest of the flight waits as LZ D-Handle is again being attacked by ground forces.

The two Gator ships at Task Force Alpha's location bring in ammo and are able to pull the wounded. All four of the 119th birds come under fire during this sortie.

The soldiers at D-Handle have repelled the enemy. Sappers were able to breach the perimeter and destroy a couple of bunkers before they were driven back. Two ships are sent to pull wounded and three others pick up a platoon of A/3/12 from LZ Cider to reinforce D-Handle. Another ship has the duty to pull the dead out.

A three ship lifted is organized to get the weapons platoon of D/1/8 into FSB 27. They are still located at FSB 20. The flight between these two bases is only five minutes by air. The terrain is so bad that it would take two days for them to cover it by foot. During the move the artillery crews will have to cease firing for us to get into FSB 20. This is the first break they have had all night. The move is completed with two sorties apiece.

The remainer of the day is spent with resupply and hauling more artillery rounds into the bases. Again the fire is deemed to heavy for the CH-47s. FSB 20 alone has fired 800 rounds of 105mm and 200 rounds of 4.2 mortars in support of Task Force Alpha. The troops in the northern part of the valley are being brought back to their bases. All patrols and LPs are being recalled for some reason.

Returning to Holloway none of us knew what big plans were in the works. We were all tried and hunger. We had been on the go for fifteen hours. The can of c-rats that we were able to eat during one of the trips into the bases was the only food we had gotten today. March was almost over. How much longer would this last was our only question.
