April 6-- April 14, 1969

For the next several days we would dodge artillery and air strikes in order to resupply the firebases and landing zones in the valley. A few SRP would be sent out but most of the operations in the valley were over. C/3/8 would make contact on April 6th which would result in 1 KIA and 4 WIAs. On April 9th 3 LRRP teams went into the contact areas and recovered 1 MIA. The enemy had on the most part had melted back across the border and was nowhere to be found.

April 10th and 11th the units of the 3/8th and 1/22nd once again went into the contact areas and were able to recover a total of 16 MIAs. Beginning on the 12th of April units of the 1/22nd were airlifted out of the valley. By the 13th most of the firebases with the artillery units were out along with units of the 3/8th. The final extractions came on April 14th as the remainer of the 3/12th closed LZ D-Handle.

Elements of the 3/12th were taken to Kontum to be airlifted to An Khe. The 3/8th came under 2nd Brigade's operational control and would remain in the Kontum area with the units of the 1/22nd. By the end of the month new firebases and landing zones would appear along the southeastern edge of the valley. Places like LZ Punchbowl and LZ Penny to name a few.

Operation Wayne Grey had lasted 45 days. During this time US casualties would total 179 killed. I have included numbers from the 2nd Brigade. Although not actually assigned to the operation, their casualties were cause by it. The battle of Hill 994 was the result of a recon in force to find enemy artillery pieces which were being used against FSB 20 and LZ Swinger. US wounded totaled 1015 and 8 missing. Enemy losses were 575 killed and 4 POWs. An actuate number of casualties could not be established but unconfirmed reports puts the number over 1500. Because of the amount of enemy equipment which was captured this number may be valid. The main mission was to interrupt enemy supply routes and hinder his ability to wage war in the central highlands. This for the time being was accomplished.

As for the 119th AHC we would suffer 1 KIA and 6 WIA. Of the 19 UH-1H which started the month of March, 3 would be destroyed and 14 would receive combat damage. Seven of eight UH-1C gunships would also be damaged. For their efforts during this operation 64 decorations for heroism and valor would be awarded to the air crews of the 119th. For each of these awards another two hundred should have been given to the support people who kept us in the air during this time.

Less then a month later another battle would be fought. To the north in the Ashau Valley. The 101st ABN would fight the ten day battle for Hamburger Hill. The people back home would see this battle unfold on their TV sets as the war became more unpopular. Operation Wayne Grey would disappear as many of the actions of the 4th Infantry Division would do. For the ones which were there it has never gone away.
