Re: CACF Vietnam
In Response To: CACF Vietnam ()

Thanks for the help guys. Bob K, I had the names, all were from 3-12 except for Wolfe, who was from the 6/29 FA. I did a search on each name to see if anybody had written something about them and couldn't find a thing.
This whole thing is quite the mystery as to why we can't find any details of the battle.
Jim sent me a couple more emails.

George,
The other chopper co. could have been the Buccaneers. I knew the Crocs
and Gators flew with us. But like I say...its been a long time. The
ship that rescued us, flew through the mortar zone. We watched mortars
being walked toward the down ship as we boarded the rescue ship. Down
the valley the mortars came.
I recall the helicopter as being old and noisy...not as tight as our
ship and I could almost hear the grinding of the gears in the main
rotor.
I still was in shock. My cherry busted and bleeding slightly from my
chin where a bullet had splattered magnesium in my face. One bullet came
an inch from my foot right between my arms which were holding my M-60
straight out. I remember say, as I dropped my M-60. Sir," I think we're
hit"! The chopper weaved and swayed after that...and a cloud of smoke
was pouring out from the under carriage.
We made to the valley.
We had 52 holes in the ship when it was brought into maint. #264 was the
number of the ship. I don't know the pilots names.
Could have been Ledfor? Gallager? or who knows.
Jim Shei...the crewchief lives in Hanna Indiana at this time. If you
ever want to investigate the credibility of this event.
Like I told you earlier. One of the pilots claimed he had to be held
back from killing the Co that had set up the whole
insert. He(AC) claims he had his pistol ready and the Co. ran back into
his tent or bunker.(Thats all hearsay) And could be bullshit. But...its
been told more than once.
I have the book "Where We Were" and it is the most complete
informational book on FSB's Map locations etc. But Hill 1258 is not in
it. Only 1228 ..1262...1255 but nothing else matches even close to the
coordinates.
Its dam puzzling!
Jim

George,

I relive this incident a lot. I guess trying to figure it all out.. and
it truely was a defining moment in my life.
I remember flying to the NorthWest about a click or so. Circling around
and around to what seemed like 1/2 hr. Listening to the person in
charge on the ground in my headsets. It was like a dream....a
surrealistic stoppage of time. The guy was screaming for more help. That
most of the guys had been killed including the RTO on the first insert.
The fast movers and Gunships were hitting all around the FSB to try and
take out the NVA. The guy on the ground said they were in the bunkers or
bunker when he was dropped off. So there had to be some fox holes dug or
a bunker already there. When we went in the second time they(NVA) were
still in the trees. It was unbelievable. Jim Shei saw one and he waved
to Shei.
Strange day.
Jim
