Re: Helicopter
In Response To: Helicopter ()

Tim,

Gator 297 burned when it went down. What was left was destroyed by the grunts which went in to secure the site and recover the crew.

When a ship went down it would depend on where it was and how badly damaged it was. If the area could be secured by infantry a recovery team would go in and rig the ship to be sling loaded out by a CH-47 or Ch-54 helicopter.

If the area was too "Hot" or the ship was too badly damaged the crew would destroy the ship with a white phosphorus gernade. The main thing was the radios. Didn't want the enemy to get his hands on those. If the crew was unable to destroy the ship either artillery or air strike would be called in.

During my tour most of the ships which were shot down were able to get to an area where they could be recovered. Off the top of my head I can remember four which were not recovered, one of these being Gator 297.

What is Eddie's wife's name and do you have her address? I would like to send her a copy. My address is 23440 Link Ln. Plainfield,IL.60544. The damage is $25.00. I will have your copy in the mail on Monday.

Ron
