No need to, Tom.

Generac has simple isolation/transfer switches that you mount right next to your main panel, simple wiring job, very reasonably priced.

Power goes, you flip the Generac switch, which isolates you from the grid, then you plug in the generator and start 'er up. It only powers the circuits you have selected, and it protects the line workers from your generator.

Really slick. I bet you'll find info on the web. Home Depot's been selling them for several years, also.
