Vietnam in September 2005

I met up with a Vietnam Vet last night in Morristown, NJ when I went out for a short ride on the Harley. He (Dave) was a Dog Handler in '67, today he runs a small store in Morristown. He makes yearly trips back to Vietnam to help with a childrens hospital there, bringing medicine, supplies etc. to help out. He extended an invitation to join him and a few others when he goes back next year. If I heard him right, this would be his 8th or 9th trip back.

Sounded like they are really opening the traveling up for Visitors. I know a few years ago when I talked to a couple of people who setup trips for Vets, it was still pretty tricky and your itinerary was watched closely. According to Dave, he pretty much does what he wants. He has been to Pleiku about 3 years ago and said Camp Holloway as still there. He also said that they have started allowing tours of places that have been taken over (like Holloway) so it's possible to get in and see it. He would be more than happy to go back to Pleiku next year.

He put the price tag at about $2000, and he stays 16 days. Most of that is the plane ride. Hotels etc. sound very cheap (and these are 4 star). If anyone is interested, I'm sure he would be willing to discuss it more. I am seriously thinking about going. It's a year away and is plenty of time to learn more and to make plans.

What do you think ??
