The State of My Union

After watching the news and weather this morning as I prepared myself for another day of toil and trouble it came to me.

Over the past six weeks, the weather has been completely nuts. One week we have 60 degrees followed by snow and sub-zero temps. I mean, let's face it. In Dave Silk's neck of the woods it had gotten down to 54 degrees below zero. Once you get to zero how much worst can it be. Cold is cold. You can only hope that the power stays on and there is plenty of goodies to eat until you dare venture out. Bob K. has 60 degree weather and then the Colts show up for what should be the best game of the years and bingo. Instant ice-age. The Pats knew what they were doing by not putting a roof on their new home.

I believe that all of these events can be traced back to Oct. 27, 2004. For those of you that have been living in a cave, that was the day "The Curse of the Bambino" finally ended. The people of Boston and greater New England after 86 years finally had the "Big One." Relatives flocked to the streets and the grave yards to share their joy. People knelt by tombstones to share their stories with loved ones that had gone to the great beyond and never felt the thrill of this victory. I can only imagine what might happen if the Pats get by the Steelers and go on to win the Super Bowl. The world as we know it will never be the same.

With that in mind, does anybody remember who the Red Sox beat 86 years ago? You guessed it. The Chicago Cubs. The picture boys for the "Born Losers" of the world. This came to me as I read the sports page yesterday. Baseball fever has already started here. Ryne Sandberg will enter the "Hall of Fame" this year. The long time second baseman was on the team which was always close but never won the brass ring. The Cubs themselves have been busy signing people who will finally bring the Championship to the "City with Big Shoulders". We needed big shoulders to cry on as each year we again would realize that we would have to wait until next year.

So as the weekend approaches and we again cheer for our favorite team remember what happened back in Oct. I believe that life on this planet would continue if the Pats go all the way, but then we will all have to prayer that the Cubs don't raise up from the dead and make a run in Oct. This would mean the end as we know it.
