BK you are absolutely right on that CA part.
Escorts need to be a lot heavier armed than an old C Model though.
Today, given command I'd recon via a local RPV, providing direct Realtime viewing to the air mission commander tied to auto target detection. This would be in place and controled from the AMC ship throughout the mission.
I'd use heavy bombs to soften the direct LZ and take out mines and perimiter personnel. I'd use cluster bombs to soften selected spots in the outer perimeter for several hundred yards. Then we'd go in with all countemeasures on high, cobras saturating the outer edges of the flight and each door gunner primed to zap ANYONE in the immediate area. no waiting to ID a civilian (a heat seeker takes just a few seconds to fire and even less to reach the target). This would change a bit in farm country but still would keep their heads down. (The old axium " you can't just indiscriminately toss ordanance about the countryside, it tends to piss off the natives" is still true.
Over head I'd have Fighter bombers with precision stuff in case all went to hell in a handbasket.
BTW, the Army is bringing back a modern version of the old C model, It's called the Light Attack Helicopter (LAH) but with much more sophisticated fire control and weapons.
