yup. that is how the Goins side of my mom's family was. They were mostly Portegese (Look up the name) and some cherokee but in the interest of running them off as "Indians" Or "Free Perasons of color" to get the land, they declared them part negro. and kept it up until this century. They claimed Portegese decent and spoke elizebethan English. I can remember my grandmother saying to me, "Dinna ye do that Bobby" for "Do not do that". Anyway the Mulengeon Research group has a lot of answers. Brent Kennedy leads the effort
