: That is great that this has been done but a few
: things bothers me about it. What happens
: when a person actually has gotten one of
: these medals in a classified mission in a
: war zone but cannot prove it because it was
: classified and cannot get anything from the
: veterans administration because of a fire
: that burned their records because of poor
: management on the governments fault. If this
: person actually received these medals but
: something happened to them before he got
: home or after, then what grounds does this
: person have that is telling the truth but
: cannot get the proof he needs from the
: government? Does this person go to jail for
: telling the truth because his documents was
: not recorded in duplicates other than in one
: place or does the government have more than
: one place that can prove this person is
: telling the truth about his medals? From
: what I understand the government doesn't
: keep good enough records to show what a
: person did in combat. It's like pulling
: teeth to try to get anything from them
: anyway. They want you to do the dirty work
: and hide it where you are not entitled to
: anything and if you are they fight you with
: all their might and find a way to destroy a
: lot it. How convenient? It's good they are
: cracking down on the ones that are taking
: the glory away from the ones that deserve
: it. Can anyone tell me if there is a place
: other than St. Louis that keeps records and
: classified records that may be obtained
: since St.Louis had a fire and it destroyed a
: lot.I don't know if classified back in the
: Vietnam war is still classified today.Sorry
: all, I get really heated up about what is
: taken away from the deserving veterans.

Bonnie, the book "Stolen Valor" by Jug Burkett and Glenna Whitley will answer many of your questions.

The "classified mission" and "burned records" thing is an excuse used by many phonies. In fact, the only Army records destroyed were those of Army personnel discharged BEFORE January 1, 1960.

Also, some information is available from alternate sources, but no "backup" records, as such, were kept for the records that were destroyed.

"Stolen Valor" has the whole story, and will give you a taste of what the typical phony story includes. The lies are usually surprisingly similar.
